Stocks rose Thursday but came off earlier highs as the number of Americans filing for first-time unemployment benefits pointed to a gradual recovery in the labor market and investors focused on movement on a potential stimulus bill that has been deadlocked in Congress for months.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 123 points, or 0.41%, to 30,007, the S&P 500 gained 0.03% and the Nasdaq rose 0.36%.
